SC @ FRIM

Organized by Danny Siah & in charged by Jason Lam, a trip to FRIM( Forest Research Institute Malaysia),Kepong was a success

It was a 1 night camping trip, with barbeque(BBQ), jungle night walk, waterfall fun, sing-along sessions & bonfire that is accompanied with a team building game.

Food & beverages, camping tents, itineraries of what to bring were well handled by Jason Lam.

A total of about 21 people went for this trip. It was an experience to be experience once in a lifetime for those city/ town people who hasn’t been in touch with the beauty that mother nature has to offer to us.

JOURNEY TO THE WATERFALL

The trip started with everyone gathering at Centre point first. Then, with a train of a few cars, we headed to FRIM . The first thing that we did when we got there was first to clean the camp site, set up our tents & have lunch. Lunch, (nasi lemak that was bought)was also taken care of by Jason Lam.

After stuffing our bellies with food, off we went to the waterfall. It was a few KM walk from our campsite to the waterfall site. But along the way, we were having sing- alongs to keep ourselves entertained throughout the walk to the waterfall. When reaching the waterfall site, everyone was quite astonished that there was no typical waterfall scene of high rocks with water splashing down into a pool.

But, we soon found out that it was actually at the top & that requires us to climb through rough terrain of branches, dirt & slippery rocks। Many were wearing sandals thus it made the climbing a little tough, but as we were so determined to see the waterfall at the top, we continued to climb as much as our shoes/ sandals could take us !!

Many of us stopped when we finally saw the waterfall splashing on rocks to a small stream and flowing into a pool.

It wasn’t the top yet, but we climbed quite high and the best part was there were no people having picnics or small kid insight, WE HAD THE PLACE ALL TO OURSELVES। !!

The guys went wild , some took off their shirt and started heading straight to the splashing water to have a waterfall massage।

The girls sat by the rock banks and just enjoy the flow of COLD WATER! ( seriously its cold!) running through the legs। Eventually everyone started splashing here and there at each other & everyone started doing wacky things only imaginable when you are having absolute fun ( shouting your lungs out, slidding down the rocks to the pool, swimming in the really shallow pool, guys daring each other to take Shirts off . Eventually all the guys were shirtless. After we had enough fun and soak wet from head to toe = equivalent to bathing but only without soap. We went back to our campsite at around 3 something in the evening.

We dint had to pass through those rocky terrain when we went down, instead we took a jungle route! It was nature to the max, with insects sounds, the shady greens, nice weather...due to our tiredness, we accidently split ourselves into 2 groups, the slower ones were quite behind the faster walking ones. Finally we all reached back our camp sites and took a little breather while awaiting to prepare for dinner . i think it was almost 5pm when we got back to the camp, but the walk from the jungle didn’t seem that long, time is lost when you are having fun! =)

OH! YA~~ did I mention our campsite had florescent lamps ,public toilets with bathing area and a gazebo like platform with fan and lights. So it wasn’t completely all in the wild type but it’s a good enough experience for people who are first timer campers and are not so used being limited by the daily necessity of electricity.

DINNER ACTIVITIES

Then it came to BBQ time~~ many of us helped out with starting the fire of the barbeque pit and bonfire pit. Luckily we brought parang( a big knife ) to chop woods for the bonfire.

Utensils ,barbeque food, sauces were all brought by us. So, basically we had to cook our own food & also clean up which requires teamwork!

Everyone did a great job in helping each other out, we enjoyed our meals by the bonfire because there was a sitting area, whereas some of us just ate at the BBQ pit, while watching over the food being BBQ-ed. We manage to clean up the food and BBQ pit before the sky turned pitch black. Then we just sat around the bonfire, chit chatting, listening to each other tell stories of legends, myths & so on.

TEAM BUILDING GAME & BONDING SESSION

Not long ,Michelle Tan( president of SC 2010) & Chaman Singh( president of SC 2009) joined us, they came to the camp at night! With their busy schedule ,at least it was great that they still manage to folk out some time to have some fun with us =) Under Chaman’s “lead” we played a team building game. The game was to first split in groups, each group is then given a pencil, eraser, a tag and an incomplete maze. Everyone is also given a piece of paper stating whether he/ she is a sabotage of the group. The task was to complete the maze at t he same time find out who in the group is trying to sabotage the group from completing the maze. It was a trick game whereby there were no paper stating anyone is a sabotage! IT WAS MERELY TO SEE HOW MUCH WE TRUSTED EACH OTHER IN COMPLETING THIS GAME. 2 groups showed that they did not trusted their members, as they kicked their members out during the game.

After that, we had a take turns session of confession about anything related to ourselves, mainly mentioning our weaknesses/ apologizing and thanking people. It was an intense moment, no doubt but we manage to clear the air about certain issues & also gain the chance to change for the better.

JUNGLE NIGHTWALK

11pm..the ranger guide arrived to bring us into the jungle to experience Jungle life in the dark. Armed with our torch lights , we went in with him as a group with given partners, so none of us will fall behind or being called into the forest ( we were warned about superstitious stuff beforehand entering the jungle. Along the way, he will explain certain bugs or interesting facts about the jungle and when he does such, he will asks us to turn off our torch. At one part of the jungle we got to experience a magic the jungle has to offer at night. It was a certain type of tree species ( pokok Kapur) which at night u look up to the sky at their leaves, it seems like they only have 1 layer, very Avatar feel (if you get what i mean) .According to the guide, this beauty can’t even be captured clearly by any powerful camera! So it’s something not to be missed!

Back the camp! Thinking everyone would wanna catch a shut eye after the nightwalk, instead many stayed up to play Mafia card game + truth /dare. After a moment everyone went back to their tents , some manage to sleep, some couldn’t and decided to pull a prank with toothpaste to those who are sleeping.

It was a really cool night, natural air-cond~~! The next day many are already awake 8AM . Breakfast was being cooked by Jason Lam for everyone ( Maggie mee + Milo)

Then it was time to pack up and leave Of course not forgetting to capture the memories, we took a group picture!

Not only did we have fun, but the Student Council members each did learn something about one another and also experienced a great teamwork in this adventure! Through this teamwork that we had there, if we could incorporate it during all our events & treat it like an adventure to participate in, we really could make a lot happen! =)
